Discography

To avoid confusing the issue too much this will be a selective discography to cover all the work Brian did with the Pretty Things, as well as taped music recorded during his time with So What! There are obviously many Pretty Things compilations/collections but rather than refer to these I will refer to the two albums the band cut while he was a member along with any singles (such as Progress) that were not covered by either of those LPs. There may be other tracks I have not covered, possibly issued abroad; I would be happy to stand corrected! The tracks in italics refer to the additional tracks added to the CD re-issues of the two original albums and the italic text beneath that refers to the bonus film footage featured on each CD.

Film Footage

Based on my private collection:

The Blokker Festival

I own a DVD called Pretty Things 1966-1981 which is of extremely poor quality, to the extent that I can hardly bear to look at most of it. The 'best' clip is of the band playing at the Blokker Festival in 1965 (so even the CD title is wrong). For this footage it was just about worth buying, from my point of view mostly to see Brian but also the rest of the band in their heyday and in particular Viv Prince's drumming expertise. The band are featured playing:

Honey I Need

Don't Bring Me Down

Big Boss Man (plus closing credits as the Dutch TV station, innundated with complaints, closed the programme down)

Roadrunner (partial)

Rosalyn (partial), Brian plays slide guitar centre stage (briefly!)

For more info, see the “Big Time” section.

There is other footage featuring Brian, but better copies of some of it can be obtained/seen elsewhere (and is mentioned below with a *) and the remainder, which seems to be Dutch television appearances, is of particularly bad quality.

As of 05/03/06 it is possible to see footage of the Blokker festival by clicking here.

From the BBC series “Sound of the Sixties” *

The Pretty Things perform “Midnight To Six Man” in a clip from a programme called “A Whole Scene Going”. I consider the recording to be of very good quality for its time. Brian features fairly prominently (see the “Pressures” section). The Series is available to buy on CD/DVD. You can also see it by clicking here.

“Pretty Things On Film” *

As mentioned above, this 15 minute gem available on the CD version of Get The Picture features the band playing Midnight To Six Man (in the studio), Can't Stand The Pain (while the band 'caper' around) and Me Needing You and LSD, performed live on film but overdubbed by studio takes, much to Brian's disgust. Again, see the “Pressures” section for more info.

“Don't Look Back”

Brian appears in this Bob Dylan documentary for a good 5-10 minutes; like “Pretty Things On Film” if you are a Pendleton fan this is a must-see. If you listen carefully you can hear him talking but sadly he is not in the credits. I have asked the Internet Movie Database to include Brian in the cast list and so join several other musicians who already appear on their record of the movie as an "uncredited appearance". See the “Big Time” section for more info.

Beat Club Footage

The Pretties played here in April 1966. The tracks played are Raining In My Heart Roadrunner and Midnight To Six Man.

Big City

I think this is from Shindig (please correct me if I'm wrong); Brian is standing close to a very dishevelled-looking Viv Prince. To view click here.

Hopefully more footage of Brian will come to light as time progresses.

thank you
